Roberts, who has established himself as a doctor in Cardiff while also serving as a pundit for ITV during this year’s Six Nations, finished an exhausting 12-hour shift at University of Wales Hospital Cardiff before jumping into a taxi bound for London on Friday evening.
As he prepares to provide commentary for ITV alongside former teammate Dan Biggar during the opening match between Wales and England in the Six Nations tournament, Roberts is also navigating his role on the Welsh Rugby Union board. This position has placed him at the center of controversy among fans, particularly amidst discussions surrounding the future of the Ospreys rugby team.
In a brief yet entertaining video shared from the parking lot of Heath Hospital in Cardiff, Roberts, still clad in his medical scrubs with a stethoscope draped around his neck, enthusiastically said to the camera, "12-hour shift, long day. Twickenham, please drive! See you there!" His eagerness to transition from doctor to commentator highlights the unique balancing act he performs between his medical career and his passion for rugby.
Roberts embarked on his two-year foundation training in hospitals across South Wales last year. After years spent playing for the national team, he made the bold decision to pursue medicine. Since then, he has completed his first rotation focusing on geriatrics and is currently engaged in general surgery.
Reflecting on his journey, Roberts expressed, "I always thought that I didn't want rugby to define the second half of my life. While my past experiences will influence me, it's essential to start from the bottom and work my way up."

He elaborated on the challenging choice to consolidate the number of professional teams, stating, "Transitioning from four to three teams is incredibly difficult because we understand the repercussions it will have. However, these choices are made in the best interest of Welsh rugby, aiming to revive our club teams and elevate the Test side to compete at the highest levels once again."
"People may disagree with these decisions, but I believe that if you were to present all relevant data to ten rational individuals who love the game—who, naturally, are also board members—they would likely arrive at similar conclusions."
