The Golden Grizzlies made a stunning debut at the Horizon League Championships, leaving their competitors in awe and setting new records. But here's where it gets controversial: some believe their success is not just about talent, but also about strategy. Nevertheless, the team's performance on day one was nothing short of impressive, with every event seeing a Golden Grizzlies athlete on the podium.
The day's events included the 200 medley relay, the women's three-meter dive, and the 800 free relay. The women's 200 medley relay, led by sophomore Grace Albrecht, finished third, just 0.75 seconds behind the champion Milwaukee team. On the men's side, seniors Christopher Palvadre, Micah Scheffer, and Charles Brown, along with freshman Ajjuub Ezzat, claimed second place.
The women's three-meter dive saw two Golden Grizzlies, Victoria Sanders and Elizabeth Woollcott, securing spots in the finals and guaranteeing top-eight finishes. Sanders secured third place, while Woollcott finished fifth.
In the 800 free relay, both Oakland teams took the victory. The women's team, led by seniors Erika Pietras and Mia Englender, along with sophomores Kelley Hassett and Viviane Partridge, won in 7:18.47. The men's team, featuring seniors Nicholas Karel Subagyo and Harry Nicholson, along with juniors Max Haney and Joseph Countryman, shattered the previous league and school record.
With podium finishes in every event, the Golden Grizzlies are currently leading the men's and women's standings. The men have 74 points, while the women have 103.
