Dartbrook Coal Mine Extension: NSW Government's Decision Sparks Controversy (2026)

In a move that has sparked outrage and debate, the NSW government has quietly granted a six-year lifeline to the embattled Dartbrook coal mine in the Hunter Valley—a decision that feels like a slap in the face to those already reeling from its financial turmoil. But here’s where it gets controversial: this extension comes just weeks after allegations of conflicts of interest surfaced, leaving many to question the government’s priorities. Is this a rescue mission or a reward for mismanagement?

The Dartbrook mine has been a poster child for trouble since its collapse into insolvency in mid-2025, following a defaulted $202 million loan. Add to that the $5 million owed to unsecured creditors—many of them local businesses now teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. To make matters worse, two-thirds of the workforce has been laid off, leaving the mine operating with a bare-bones crew. One of its joint venture partners has been suspended on the stock exchange since October, and receivers have threatened to mothball the operation if a buyer isn’t found soon. And this is the part most people miss: despite all this, the mine is sitting on a stockpile of 150,000 tonnes of coal and has the potential to extract another 36 million tonnes over the next six years.

'A lost opportunity,' declared Dave Layzell, the Nationals' state member for Upper Hunter. He argues the government could have used the extension as leverage to ensure local operators and contractors get paid. 'Why should we give you an extension if you’re going to behave in this manner?' he asked pointedly. Layzell believes the site could generate 'many, many millions' in the future, but only if those in charge honor their social obligation to the community. 'There’s still a huge amount of coal at Dartbrook,' he said. 'It’s not just about the future—it’s about taking care of the people of the present.'

One anonymous local operator, who claims to be out hundreds of thousands of dollars, expressed disgust at the decision. 'All the bad news, and then they get a six-year extension? It leaves a dirty taste in your mouth,' he said. 'Who would ever want to work for a place like that again?'

But not everyone is unhappy. Muswellbrook Shire Mayor Jeff Drayton sees the extension as a potential savior, making the mine more attractive to buyers. 'Hopefully, they can sell it, restart production, and begin rehiring,' he said. Drayton has been vocal about withdrawing council support if creditors aren’t repaid, emphasizing that 'hundreds of thousands of dollars owed to small businesses is enough to send them under.'

And here’s where it gets even more contentious: earlier this year, a whistleblower report revealed damning allegations of conflicts of interest among senior managers at Tetra Resources, one of the joint-venture partners. The report claimed that Tetra’s CEO Michael Mapp and executive chair Brian MacDonald awarded a $2.3 million contract to an equipment-hire company they themselves directed. While Tetra denies wrongdoing, the scandal raises serious questions about transparency and accountability.

So, what do you think? Is this extension a necessary step to save jobs and local businesses, or is it a misguided reward for a troubled operation? Should the government have demanded more accountability before granting this lifeline? Let us know in the comments—this is one debate that’s far from over.
