A breakthrough in healthcare is here for Australians battling chronic kidney disease and psoriasis! An incredible step forward in affordable treatment options has been taken by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
For those living with chronic kidney disease, a larger number of Australians will now have access to the expanded PBS listing of Dapagliflozin (Forxiga®). This is a game-changer, as chronic kidney disease is a serious and life-altering condition where the kidneys struggle to filter waste, potentially leading to severe complications like heart disease and kidney failure. The expansion of this treatment option provides a glimmer of hope, helping to reduce the strain on kidneys and slow down the progression of the disease.
Imagine the impact this will have on the lives of the estimated 65,000 Australians who are expected to benefit from this listing each year! Without the PBS subsidy, patients could be facing a staggering cost of over $670 per script. But with the PBS, eligible patients will only pay a maximum of $25 per script, or just $7.70 with a concession card. That's a significant difference and a huge relief for those in need.
And here's where it gets even better! For individuals suffering from chronic stable plaque-type psoriasis vulgaris, a new treatment option is now available on the PBS for the first time - Calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate (Wynzora®). Plaque psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that can be incredibly uncomfortable and distressing, causing raised, red, scaly patches that often affect daily life and confidence. Wynzora® works by slowing down the overgrowth of skin cells, while betamethasone reduces inflammation and irritation. Together, they offer a powerful combination to help clear plaques, relieve symptoms, and improve the quality of life for those living with psoriasis.
In 2024 alone, over 141,000 patients accessed a comparable treatment through the PBS. Without the subsidy, patients might have paid a whopping $65 per script. But with the PBS listing, the maximum out-of-pocket expense is reduced to a mere $25 per script, or $7.70 with a concession card.
Since July 2022, the Australian Government has shown its commitment to improving access to affordable medicines by approving extra funding for an impressive 399 new and amended listings on the PBS. This is a significant step towards ensuring that Australians can access the treatments they need without breaking the bank.
Minister Butler emphasizes the life-changing impact of these listings, stating, "The Albanese Government is dedicated to ensuring Australians can access the medicines they require at an affordable price. Without the PBS, Australian patients would be facing thousands of dollars in costs, instead of the newly reduced maximum of $25 per script, or just $7.70 for concession card holders."
