Prepare to embark on a journey through the world of Australian supermarket muesli bars, where we uncover the truth behind their flavors and textures. A tale of crunch, chew, and everything in between awaits!
I've had a lifelong love affair with muesli, from my school days to my university years, where I became a muesli dealer of sorts. My passion led me to create an Instagram account dedicated to reviewing muesli, and I've since tried an impressive array of brands. My philosophy? The best muesli boasts top-notch ingredients and a delightful contrast in textures.
However, the muesli bar industry seems to have a different agenda. Supermarket shelves are filled with an ever-evolving array of flavors, some inspired by childhood treats, others veering into quasi-protein territory. It's a wild ride, but I set out to find the best muesli bars, considering health-conscious parents and my own muesli philosophy.
I narrowed down the field, excluding chocolate, yogurt, and overly sweet options, as well as protein-centric bars. The final lineup consisted of 19 muesli and nut bars, a diverse mix of nuts, grains, and dried fruits. With the help of four friends, we conducted a blind taste test at Solstice cafe in Sydney, evaluating each bar for texture and taste.
And here's where it gets controversial... Despite my efforts to exclude dessert-like bars, we still encountered a range of products that fell short of my muesli bar ideal. Many were too sweet, while others lacked the crunch or chew I crave. It was a journey through basic muesli and oat products, with a few unusual suspects thrown in for good measure.
So, which bars rose to the top?
The Best Muesli Bar:
Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Canadian Maple Syrup - A true champion of crunch! With 60% toasted oats, this bar delivers a satisfying texture and a toasty flavor. It's a throwback to my childhood, and a reminder that undercooked nuts and grains are all too common.
The Best Nut Bar:
Sam's Pantry Honey Salted Macadamia With Roasted Almonds Nut Bar - A true nut binge! This bar offers a delightful honey-butter appeal, and it's a welcome change from the many nut-free options on supermarket shelves. As one reviewer put it, it's "energy dense in a whole food kind of way."
The Best Value:
Hillcrest Premium Nut Bars Almonds, Cashews & Cranberries - This bar comes close to my ideal muesli bar. The diversity of ingredients creates a wonderful contrast, from the chewiness of cranberries to the creaminess of peanuts and cashews. It's a well-rounded, satisfying snack.
The Rest:
Carman's and Hillcrest battle it out with their nut and muesli bars, but the real winner might be your taste buds. Both offer a familiar, supermarket-quality experience, with a generous dose of cinnamon.
Koja Oat Bites Muesli Slice takes a bold approach, but it's a divisive one. Some loved its soft, buttery texture, while others were put off by the chia seeds. It's a unique take on the muesli bar, and a reminder that not all bars are created equal.
Oh So Natural Date & Chia Gluten-Free Bars had potential, but fell short with its undercooked, sticky texture. It's a reminder that gluten-free mueslis can be a hit or miss.
Uncle Tobys Chewy Apricot brings back nostalgic memories, but not necessarily in a good way. The synthetic flavor and sweetness were criticized, but it's a reminder that nostalgia can be a powerful force.
Mother Earth Golden Oats Baked Oaty Slices might be budget-friendly, but it lacks the charm of a true muesli bar. The flavor is vague, and the texture is fibrous and dusty. It's a reminder that health food can sometimes be more style than substance.
Ceres Organics Organic Oaty Bars Banana looks like space food, and the flavor and texture don't disappoint. It's a unique take on a muesli bar, but the overt use of chia seeds might be a deal-breaker for some.
And finally, the Pringle of the muesli bar world - Hillcrest Oat Bars Golden Oats. This bar is a strange, unnatural experience, with a sweet aroma that's otherworldly. The texture is dusty and crumbly, and the flavor lingers far too long. As one reviewer asked, "How is it both dry and moist?" It's a bar you might reach for in a desperate situation, but not one you'd choose willingly.
So, there you have it! A journey through the world of Australian muesli bars, where crunch, chew, and everything in between reign supreme. Which bar would you choose? And what's your ideal muesli bar experience? Let's spark a discussion in the comments!
